Lesson 1: Introduction

If there were only one place to be positioned in the marketplace, you would have no need for strategy. A strategy is about differentiating your business from competitors by deliberately choosing a set of different activities to deliver a unique mix of value. However, a business can’t just focus on delivering a competitive advantage as a once off; to be successful, it needs to develop a sustainable strategy.

In this module, we will discuss the theory and practice of strategy as well as the role of operations management within a startup. We will also focus on financial management and financial practices specifically for a startup business.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand the basic theory and practice of strategy
  • Discuss the roles that fit, and trade-offs play in developing a strategy
  • Understand the basic tenets of startup finance and financial management
  • Define the key financial criteria investors look for in a startup
